Welcome to Global Village Festival

Merthyr Tydfil Global Village 2020 Banner Project

In the absence of this year’s festival we would like to involve as many groups and individuals as possible in producing an addition to our textile banners that adorn our annual festival. The banners are made up of decorated fabric squares. These are displayed at every festival and often provide us the backdrop to our stage area.

The theme of the banners is ’All Together Now’ and we would like you to reflect on what this means for you in 2020. It could be the Key Workers rainbows, the decorated remembrance trees, the Black Lives Matter campaign, something you have missed or something that has kept you sane over the last few months. Other examples could be home schooling, quiet skies, our realisation of the importance of nature, community helpers. The important thing is that it reflects your 2020 experience.

Full instructions are provided below but remember that you can decorate your square in any way you choose, fabric paint, applique, embroidery, stitching, transfer, crochet or knit and then attach. It’s up to you!

Instructions: Find a piece of plain fabric – an old pillowcase is ideal. Cut out a 25cm square. With a pencil, mark 2cm in from the outer edge all around. Make sure your finished design fits within that 23 cm square. (The 2 cm allowance is used to attach your square to the banner.)

Send your completed designs to: Merthyr Tydfil Global Village, c/o Garn House, Merthyr Tydfil, CF48 3NT.

If you live in the Merthyr area and would prefer someone to collect your items please contact us via our Facebook page (@MerthyrTydfilGlobalVillage).

Please note: All items will be quarantined before attaching to the finished banner.  Social distancing will be observed throughout. Merthyr Tydfil Global Village Trustees reserve the right to not include any design that is not suitable for our audience or does not comply with the above instructions.

Closing date for receipt of squares is August 31st 2020.

In the meantime please look after yourselves, follow the advice given, don’t panic buy, look out for neighbours, thank our NHS staff and all our key workers and keep safe.
